Supernovae Observations of the Accelerating Universe

چکیده
Over the past three decades, supernovae observations have been the primary tool used in measuring both the current expansion rate and the expansion history of the universe. Supernovae are preferred because they are the best known standard candle and they can be observed in the early and recent universe. But because they are rare and unpredictable, they are difficult to measure. In the late 1990’s, two independent groups developed wide-filed imaging methods to systematically discover supernovae type 1a, and measure their magnitude and redshift. Their results showed that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. This discovery has many implications on cosmological theory, and requires the existence of some form of dark energy or cosmological constant to supply the repulsive force that leads to acceleration.

Einstein’s Biggest Blunder? High-Redshift Supernovae and the Accelerating Universe
Nearly four years ago, two teams of observational astronomers reported that high-redshift type Ia supernovae are fainter than expected in a decelerating or freely coasting universe. The radical conclusion that the Universe has been accelerating in the past few billion years, possibly due to a nonzero value for Einstein’s cosmological constant, has gripped the world of astrophysics and caused a ...
متن کاملCan a changing α explain the Supernovae results ?
Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT We show that the Supernovae results, implying evidence for an accelerating Universe, may be closely related to the recent discovery of redshift dependence in the fine structure constant α. The link is a class of varying speed of light (VSL) theories which contain cosmological solutions similar to quintessence. During the radiation dominated epoch the cosmologi...
متن کاملConstraint on Cosmological Model with Matter Creation Using Type Ia Supernovae and Gamma-ray Bursts Observations
Using a collection of 12 γ-ray burst (GRBs) sample and 186 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data containing 157 gold and 29 silver set, we make constraints on the cosmological model with adiabatic matter creation, assuming a spatially flat universe. It is shown that the matter creation can also lead to accelerating expansion of the universe without a cosmological constant or any other dark energy co...
متن کاملThe Case for an Accelerating Universe from Supernovae To Appear as an Invited Review for PASP
The unexpected faintness of high-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), as measured by two teams, has been interpreted as evidence that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating. We review the current challenges to this interpretation and seek to answer whether the cosmological implications are compelling. We discuss future observations of SNe Ia which could offer extraordinary evidence to t...
متن کاملTesting Cosmic Acceleration with Type Ia Supernovae
We discuss recent evidence for an accelerating Universe from measurements of type Ia supernovae at high redshift, and describe tests of various systematic effects such as extinction and evolution that could be biasing the cosmological result. Continued observations of these objects, both over a wider wavelength region and at higher redshift, should provide strong evidence in favor or against th...
